Winter’s cold is too much to handle…

Ain’t it the truth.  And it’s that time of year again (unfortunately, in my opinion).  I liked the way the playlists went down last week so I decided to go with that idea again.  So wrap yourselves up in a fleece blanket, cozy up to your 9 cats, and take a listen to these fantastical new jams.

1.  Horchata by Vampire Weekend.  You’ll notice that I stole this week’s blog title from this song.  At first I thought Horchata was a hot, coffee-like beverage since the band talks about drinking it in December.  After a little research, I discovered it’s actually a cold drink and now I understand why they “look psychotic” drinking it during the winter.  I feel your pain, boys.  I tend to get weird looks since I stick to the cold bevs year-round also.  Anyway, I love this band because they’re always singing about random, upbeat topics.  If I owned a boat, every summer weekend I’d grab my friends and a cooler full of beer and just listen to nothing but Vampire Weekend all day long.

2.  Don’t Stop, Believe by The Law.  I tend to get most of my new music from AltNation on XM’s channel 47 when I’m in my car.  I stumbled across this band when listening to the show Submission»Transmission, where AltNation claims to air “the newest of the new alternative rock.”  The Law hails from Dundee, Scotland and just released their debut album, A Measure of Wealth, in September.  Their newest single from that album called The Chase debuted the same month but I haven’t had a chance to take a listen yet.  So check it out and tell me what you think.

3.  Gold Guns Girls by Metric.  I really liked their hit song Help, I’m Alive when it was released by the Canadian indie rock band, but for some reason I love this song.   They came on the scene in 2003 and released their 4th album, Fantasies, in April of this year.  I really like frontwoman, Emily Haines, because she’s multi-talented - besides lead vocals, she also plays the guitar and synthesizer.

4.  Trinity by Paper Tongues.  This band hails from Charlotte, NC.  Their hip-hop and rock combo finds me awkwardly fist-pumping in my cubicle.  7 contributing band members makes their music extremely eclectic.

5.  Kings and Queens by 30 Seconds To Mars.  Shannon Leto started this band in 1998 as a small family project between him and his brother, Jared Leto (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter - don’t forget about his acting skills though…My So-Called Life and Fight Club are obvious classics).  Since then, 30 Seconds To Mars has been through a bevvy of bandmates and now 4 remain.  This is their latest single off their 2009 record, This Is War.

Don’t forget to throw your favorite new stuff my way.

Rock on, peeps.
